Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The fact that we have dreams is crazy. That we remember them is crazier.
1·4 days agoPersonally I believe there’s more to dreams than pure biology, and similarly that there’s more to consciousness than the materialist/emergence line of thought. They are the mysteries within, like the inside of black holes are to astronomy.

News@lemmy.world•IEA calls for working from home, driving slower and flying less to tackle energy crisis | Agency says consumer demand measures needed to manage Iran war’s disruption to global markets
9·4 days agoI’m all for it. Let’s all cut back, invest in batteries and solar panels, and go off the grid.
We just moved out of the US, and we were planning on buying a car in our new home, but we might just do a couple of e-bikes instead. Especially considering our new home gets the majority of its oil via the straight of Hormuz.
I’m already shopping for solar panels.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Trump makes a Pearl Harbor joke while meeting with the Japanese prime ministerEnglish
31·4 days agoThe question he was answering was “why didn’t you tell your allies (like Japan) before attacking Iran?”
So his sarcastic answer of “why didn’t you tell the US before attacking us in WWII?” is dumb, tone deaf, and offensive.
Dumb because Japan and the US were enemies when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor… so why tf would the tell us beforehand? The question was “Why didn’t you tell your allies you were going to attack Iran,” not “Why didn’t you tell Iran you were going to attack Iran?”.
Tone deaf because he’s trying to making a joke in response to a serious question about war, and bringing up a sensitive topic between our two countries.
And offensive because he’s making it sound like Japan were the only ones who did awful things when we fought in WWII. Hot take probably, but the US did far more heinous things to Japan in WWII than they did to the US.
What I did:
Deleted the app. I still go directly to the subreddit pages I want to see (in a browser), but without logging in, and without ever looking at the home feed.
I haven’t commented on Reddit or used the app in months now. TBH, I’m even annoyed I have to go over there for my niche subs, because I hate the advertisements. I really do enjoy lemmy more than Reddit now.

1·10 days agoThe author says “this must be emergent behavior, can we call this AGI now?”
But there are no details on how the agent assumed control of the computer. Like, if it found the guy’s IP and used a zero day to hack his computer, sure, it’s AGI. But I think it’s much more likely the guy gave the agent access through some integration/API beforehand.
It’s still cool, and creepy, but it’s not as crazy as the guy is making it out to be.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Considering self hosting my own git repositories. What are some options?English
5·12 days agoI’ve set up a few gitlab servers at companies and it’s always been well received. Doing it from scratch may be more complex than you want, but I think there are docker images for a more turnkey type solution. And the option of building CI/CD pipelines in the future is always nice to have.

34·19 days agoAyahuasca helped me quit drinking. I was drinking 12-15 40ml servings of liquor per night for about 10 years. Tried to quit 4 times on my own, but always wound up giving in to the cravings again. I could feel death approaching, and decided to try Ayahuasca as a last ditch effort in 2022. I’ve been sober ever since, without even the slightest desire to drink. I also started a daily meditation practice, stopped prioritizing money over people, and stopped eating meat.
It completely changed my life, to put it mildly.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I'm sure a good lot of you, like me, had been anticipating/dreading that moment when we say, oh fuck this is it, for real. Like the BIG oh fuck. My question is, how ready are you?
2·21 days agoI was afraid my comment might come across this way, and it appears it has to some. I have not given up at all. I’m actually enjoying life right now more than I have in a very long time, despite all the chaos around us.
When I say “I wouldn’t mind it,” I don’t mean it like “just go ahead and end the misery,” I mean I’m just not super attached to this life. I believe in reincarnation, and that when we die we have a life review and then return to being one with the universe/god/source until our next life. I’m excited to see what the next step is like.

81·21 days agoI’m ok with it. I would never end my own life prematurely, because I wouldn’t want to cause my loved ones any unnecessary suffering. But I’m not afraid of death.

politics @lemmy.world•Americans Are Leaving the U.S. in Record Numbers
3·25 days agoI can only speak for myself, but I fought as hard as I could before making the tough decision to leave. I spoke up to friends, to my mostly republican family, spoke up at work (government contractor) which almost cost me my job, spoke up on social media, called my elected representatives and lawmakers, went to protests, and helped organize protests.
But after June/July 2025 I began to realize we were not getting the momentum we needed to stop the MAGA movement, and it was time to begin making a plan B (physical escape).
I’d like to think most others like me have also tried to make an impact, but at some point you have to jump ship. There’s no reason to go down with the others who refuse to wake up and smell the fascism.

7·25 days agoAirplane tickets - $8k, Sending 2 boxes of things air freight (we lost 2 boxes doing sea freight to the US a few years back, so not trying that again) - $2.5k, Vet visits + vaccinations for dog to be allowed in Japan - $1.5k, Repairs on house to list it for sale - $11k, Short term apartment rental while house is on market - $12.5k, Giving away all our stuff because there’s not enough time to list everything for sale online and spend 1-2 hours per listing dealing with people trying to haggle… and then re-buying the essentials in Japan - $20k+ (honestly idek, could be much more. Haven’t sat down and added up how much value we gave away)
This doesn’t include the $50k we dropped our house sale price to make it sell faster, or the $100k+ per year less I’ll be making at work here.
So yeah, clearly our priority here was not maximizing our net worth. We’re significantly downsizing our lifestyle financially, and prioritizing our family’s safety and peace of mind instead. It was not an easy decision to make.
