Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is forcibly upgrading Prime members to Alexa Plus, and users are not happyEnglish
9·2 months agoThis is not at all surprising. We got rid of prime about a year ago and generally have avoided buying through Amazon, but on a few occasions, it’s been the only option so we bit the bullet. It was awful.
Prices and shipping listed were for prime members (autoselected of course) with small print nonprime member prices selectable. Their once famously easy purchase process was multiple screens full of “don’t you want to rejoin prime??” pages with the option “join” already checked. Even after selecting the nonmember price and saying no to prime, going to the checkout page revealed an option auto checked for ‘faster shipping’ that was actually an option for rejoining prime. In buying multiple items this was autoselected on each of them separately, so you’re agreeing to prime if you miss changing one.
Even if I have to order from them periodically (which I avoid like the plague), I have no intention of paying for prime again. The whole purchase process is an indicator that dropping prime is making an impact and I want that message to sink in.
For those who have Alexa, downgrading the plan, or even better-- finding an alternative home assistant, will send an equally powerful message, even if Amazon isn’t ready to hear it.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Fallout: New Vegas - Me and the girls are taking back the Mojave, one dead legionnaire at a time ✨English
9·2 months agoOmg you’re going to have so much fun! It’s the best Fallout game and still one of my top 10 ever.
It’s the only game I took time to mod with textures, bug fixes and even a couple extra quests and it was totally worth it. I still think of going back and rebuilding my old modded setup.

Cool Guides•A cool guide to move away from big tech and discover new and better tools!English
1·2 months agoI use several services on this list and I’m curious about everyone’s opinions on multi-service providers and whether it’s a good idea to go with all-in-one or purchase services separately. I have a paid Proton account and use the mail and vpn, but kept 1password and dropbox accounts as well since they were already set up. It’s tempting to have everything integrated and pay one bill, but it feels risky to put all my digital eggs in one tech company basket.
What do you think?

LinkedinLunatics@sh.itjust.works•If you're curious about how the job market is looking in 2026....English
211·3 months agoFYI, here’s the posting.
Check out this job at Love-my-work: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4272457232
The company is a bit suspicious, having only 4 employees on LI, including a welder and a doctor, but I think the insane number of applicants is still pretty telling of how bad things have gotten.
This one is by far the worst I’ve seen, but all remote job postings get hundreds and often thousands of applications within a few days.

PC Gaming•Corsair Says It Mistakenly Listed An "Incorrect" Price For Dominator Titanium 48 GB DDR5; Hence, Cancels All January 1 Orders For The KitEnglish
14·3 months agoWe do not currently accept pre-orders for DRAM kits
If they don’t accept pre-orders as a rule, it seems hard to believe a system error would list something on a pre-order at any price. It reads like they listed the item too low and don’t want to look like jerks for not honoring their own posted prices.

I can’t process how that makes any sense.

Technology@lemmy.world•What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge WindowsEnglish
2·3 months agoI think it was something like that, though its been about 6 weeks so Im a little fuzzy on it now. I was following a guide I’d found online and reached something different from what the guide said, so I aborted install to check on somethings and that apparently set something that when i tried to restart installation it kept throwing an error. Something about starting the installation without completing it messed something else up that I havent been able to fix. I spent an hour or so looking through stuff, even wiped the PC and it still wouldn’t work. I’ve been meaning to go back to it but haven’t gotten around to it.

Technology@lemmy.world•What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge WindowsEnglish
3·3 months agoAgreed. We are in an age where tech is spoonfed to people with slick UIs and automated installs. Linux needs that–some kind of easy onramp to get people comfortable and familiar with it–in order to have a chance of getting broad acceptance. It’s not particularly accessible even for people with a small amount of tech knowledge and skill.
I tried to set up mint on an old laptop recently and immediately hit a roadblock before I could even get an install going. I did some research and found some options to troubleshoot it but gave up because the guidance I found online was a bit more complex than I felt comfortable acting on.
I really want to try out Linux, but if someone like me (with some technology knowledge and comfort) still gets this easily tripped up on installing it, I can’t imagine the average person taking the leap successfully.

3·3 months agoAlso curious about this. I didn’t want to do a whole new play through with a gog one but don’t really want the hassle of setting up the London mod with my steam version. Been holding off until I get more time to mess with it but the longer I go the more likely I just suck it up and start over on gog.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Apparently your hobbies becomes less interesting if you're forced to do them all the time? Who knew?English
1·3 months agoSo true. As a kid a was in a booklovers’ mail club where I’d get a couple books appropriate for my age and I loved it. I always was working through something up through high school and college.
But grad school required reading hundreds of pages of research for class every week and I was just exhausted from it. I think I only made it through the Harry Potter books throughout my PhD. I go through periods where I’ll get through a couple books, and there’s a few writers I follow, but I haven’t gotten back to loving reading the way I used to.

2·3 months agoYes! Here’s a nice summary of the recovery. https://www.thearchaeologist.org/blog/the-discovery-of-king-richard-iiis-burial-site
If youre a history buff, I highly recommend History Calling’s video on Richard III and the loss and recovery of his body. It’s lengthy but well researched and has lots of interesting context.

8·4 months agoWell I’m glad to hear it at least got an ending anyway. That’s my biggest fear with starting a new show now-so many of them just stop midway through a major plot and leave things hanging.

PC Gaming•Finally I got a chance to play Red Dead Redemption 2 for the very first time, and the graphic is clean sharp and none of that blurry mess most of the AAA games have nowadays.English
2·6 months agoThe UI is why I couldn’t finish it. My gaming PC is hooked up to my TV and even with a 70" screen I couldn’t read hardly any of the maps or menus. I even dusted of a pair of readers but still struggled. It’s a beautiful game and looks incredible but after a few hours of that I just got tired of squinting and moved on.
Maybe someday I’ll come back to it and try to find a mod or something but it’s just not worth giving myself a headache when there are so many great games out there.

It’s everywhere. Been looking at moving to Latin America (Uruguay or Panama specifically) and many businesses there don’t even have/publish regular phone numbers. The tour companies I traveled with said you can’t get anything done without whatsapp.
