UK Politics@feddit.uk•Government to pay companies to hire unemployed young peopleEnglish
3·5 days agoThe article explains it better than I could:
The government will pay firms £3,000 for each unemployed young person they employ, under new plans to boost youth employment.
Alongside the new ‘job grants,’ the government will offer an apprenticeship incentive of £2,000 for each new employee aged 16 to 24 taken on by a small- and medium-sized enterprise.

5·10 days agoEarlier this week, there was an article claiming that London is officially the second best city in the world to raise a family, because of the green spaces and family-friendly activities. However, first you need to be able to afford to raise a family in London.

Australia@aussie.zone•'We've reached a breaking point': Is it time to tax older Australians more?English
3·14 days agoOur tax system should be fair. It isn’t. Those who can afford to pay the most often pay very little.
The point of the article is that the current tax system isn’t fair, and instead it privileges wealthy older Australians:
Generous tax arrangements have also allowed older Australians to accumulate significant wealth and income linked to their real estate and superannuation assets.
Despite this growing wealth, the tax system has not adjusted, instead providing increased support for older generations, a working paper from the Australian National University’s (ANU) Tax and Transfer Policy Institute last year found.

11·20 days agoWhilst I can see the benefits of a nuclear deterrent, I do think there’s an argument for scrapping the Trident programme as it relies on US support. If there’s an alternative that makes us less reliant on the US, I think that should be explored.

1·21 days agoAccording this article - The mysterious social media posts attempting to spark street brawls - detentions have been cancelled:
For a second week in a row, Met police officers are on high alert and schools across the capital have started cancelling detentions and after-school activities. Why? A fresh spate of posts trying to organise street brawls between children at different schools has hit social media platforms like Tiktok and Snapchat.

15·24 days agoI used to refer to the Marine Conservation Society’s Good Fish Guide on the odd occasion I’d eat fish. Back then I remember mackerel being sustainable, sadly that is no longer the case as the guide for mackerel now says:
Most mackerel sold in the UK needs improvement because of long-term overfishing. Avoid mackerel caught using gillnets.

2·29 days agoI think a win in Hackney is a possibility considering in 2024 there was a 17.5% swing to the Green Party, and they got almost 23.9% of the vote.
