  • The Prologue may not be as advanced as you would like relative to other EVs, but for those who leased one last year before the credit went away… they got an insane deal. Less than $400/mo with nothing down, for the Elite (top trim level) AWD. Some got them in the $200/mo range.

I’m hoping the lease buys some time in the US market, and in 3 years there are new options that are neither Tesla (the Apple of the EV world) nor Chinese companies. Polestars are expensive and I have heard about the same service issues you mentioned. And I don’t like the idea of trading one set of spyware for another.

The Rivian R2 Standard could be a compelling (cheaper) option when it arrives. Or if nothing else there should be a lot more low-mileage used EVs coming off lease around that time. They could be cheaper and still have a lot of life left.

  • And then people in the US “need” to buy a $750K house with a walk-in butler pantry because the $350K houses don’t have enough counter and cabinet space to store their single-use bullshit applicances. I wish I was kidding.

Also the same lady who “needs” the strawberry shaver for “cooking”, actually only uses it twice per year, goes out to eat 3 times per week, and gets DoorDash meals 3 additional times per week.

  • A stainless steel no-date Rolex Submariner is probably one of the best “beater” watches money can buy. They’re pretty much bomb-proof, the auto movement is excellent, there’s no date window crystal to worry about scratching, and they’re waterproof to any reasonable depth.

If you want a very similar design dive watch with similar quality you could also get a Tudor (subsidiary of Rolex) and it would be cheaper than the Rolex. So that’s probably the “entry level” Swiss watch.

  • I have the CMF Watch 2 pro, and can confirm mostly the same.

Price point is right where OP was looking to spend which is pretty cheap for a smartwatch.

It looks good for the price, machined aluminum bezel, should work with aftermarket bands etc. It works with GadgetBridge (initial pairing was kinda jank for me, but follow the provided directions and you’ll be fine).

Most of the basic features work and are supported with GadgetBridge- step counting, push notifications etc. Some more advanced features may not work. Also if you don’t use the official Nothing/CMF app you are stuck with the 5 or 6 default preloaded watch face designs, most of which kinda suck. Maybe someone has come up with a workaround for this since I last checked.

  • Karl Jobst has done some good investigative journalism on the auction fraud and the “fractional ownership” trading platform scams.

Historically, auction houses and platforms are often using relationships with celebrities and influential people to artificially boost the prices. The platform provides the veneer of a neutral open-market sale. The celebrity provides the “credibility” of a rich buyer, justifying the record price on the game or collectable.

I’d say don’t take any retro game prices at face value, and understand your own local market before buying anything. You can list things for any price you want on eBay. Doesn’t mean the product is routinely trading at that price. Wata can list and claim a “sale” at a ridiculous price on their own platform, and currently there is no way to credibly verify that sale was to a real buyer, and not pre-arranged or fraudulent in some way designed to inflate the precieved value of the item.
