11·6 days agoThat’s not really specific.
For instance: we’re all part of a species that’s slowly destroying the ecosystem. But are we just buying extra pencils (example for something essentially inconsequential) or are we running the put-microplastics-in-the-water-supply machine (example for something that’s purposefully running the environment)?
Or in the case of the military industrial complex: how guilty is someone if they pay taxes that go towards it, compared if they signed up for engineering work, or signed up because they wanted direct combat experience?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it actually healthy for people to have a place to confess things anonymously?English
3·9 days agoWould it actually be healthier if people had a place to post these thoughts completely anonymously?
No identity. No profile. Just the confession.
I’m building a small experiment called Backroom around this idea where people can post one-line anonymous secrets.
Sounds like PostSecret but entirely online.
I’m sure there can be a lemmy sub for this, though, but I encourage you to keep building.

3·13 days agoOver here in the USA people don’t typically get money for donating blood or plasma (there are plasma donation centers that pay, but they are much harder to find), but the business still sells it to profit, iirc.
I’d rather get money as a donor, though. For now, I’ll take the free cookies instead.

Autism@lemmy.world•Anyone notice how all (well intentioned) advice for autistic people is just "mask harder"?English
13·15 days agoThey’re only taboo subjects because society (primarily NTs) decided they were taboo.
Autistic people have to follow the rules set by NTs, not the other way around.
I’m 50/50 on this.
People running a social scene (generally NTs) set the cadence, yes.
Thoughts/questions/ponderings:
- Do autistic people, as individuals, not have rules in their own head about how people should interact with them?
- Are there not rules that both autistic peeps and NTs have in common?
- In social groups composed entirely of autistic people, would another set of norms emerge that could get someone in the group scolded if they broke them, just like in the rest of society?
- When a NT person upsets an autistic person because they broke a norm they weren’t familiar with, wouldn’t they also feel bad and try to remember not to do that in the future?
Some taboos exist for good reason and apply across the board. We don’t greet strangers by asking them how their genitals are feeling, for example (although that would be hilarious).
I think I agree with Savvy more.

Why are people on forums so mad all the time? I’m trying to talk about the points you raised up - I’m not trying to attack you. If you don’t want to have a productive discussion online, and prefer to have a cathartic release: I can’t stop you.
Here’s the thing, we are going to destroy the actual planet. Not in that, “tHe pLAnEt WILl bE FInE!” Dumbass semantics shit, we have enough nukes to glass the surface, boil the oveans, and melt the atmosphere that is paired with a literal instinct to use them. The environment required to have an environment won’t exist.
You’re not psychic and this hasn’t happened yet. We should do everything we can to work against that.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to apply the concept that I’m at the center of all of this.
You’re not, but you are human, and therefore a puzzle piece in it all.
Forgot that I can single handedly fight all of this, like the main character in some short sighted fantasy storybook.
Never said that.
Fuck off with this self-centered, woo woo, narcissistically detached, masturbatory nonsense. Pull your dick out of your mouth.
If I was that flexible, I probably wouldn’t be on the forums.
You wrap it ip perfectly there at the end, though with a “Who knows, though?” We do.
Do we?
You are literally saying “ignorance is bliss, everything will be great for everyone and everything, tralalalala!” as you ignore blatant realities.
Where did I say that?
You just spent like six paragraphs explaining the joys of being a detached, oblivious, deliberate moron.
You spent a lot of effort to disparage someone you don’t know who was trying to talk to you respectfully. Have the last word if you want, now.
Red. Currently in the process of trying to set up VMs on my Fedora workstation ( with virtmanager). It’s a bit of a struggle getting them to save state right now, but once that’s done I’m one step closer to never needing to go back.

World News@lemmy.world•U.S. Troops Were Told Iran War Is for “Armageddon,” Return of JesusEnglish
1·20 days agoHope is precisely what landed us in this mess. Reason, pragmatism, and being willing to compromise on ideals is what will get us out
Not trying to get too much into semantics here, but yes, if you only hope and choose not to act, nothing will be improved. Conversely-ish, hope is needed for many to act. Being without hope will lead many to loudly announce that nothing can be made better, in addition to not acting. Again, we may only be disagreeing on definitions here.
Reason, pragmatism, and being willing to compromise on ideals is what will get us out, but guess what humans have never shown the capability nor the desire to do as a species throughout literally all of documented human civilization?
I disagree based on human history, although I admit that our conflicts are much more well documented than our ability to work together.
All we do is escalate, it’s all we’ve ever done, and it has only one possible way of ending.
Do you not think that people have worked together to prevent conflict and bring about a better world? Also, do you not think that we’ve ever worked to improve things, or are you saying that our ability to create conflict is louder than our ability to work against conflict?
Most importantly, what do you believe you’re doing, through your existence? I doubt that you’re going around trying to create conflict in your environment, but: are you?
Society is global now, destroying it this time around isn’t something that even the atmosphere will survive.
As long as the planet isn’t absolutely destroyed, I assume the destruction of our species wouldn’t cause the ecosystem to fail entirely. Who knows, though.

5·1 month agoFrom what I understand, covid can impact pretty much any system inside your body, even with infections that don’t feel like a big deal at the time, like some messed up roulette game. We weren’t able to beat it and not nearly enough people got vaccinated. I’m curious to see what literature comes out about it in about 10 years, in terms of societal impact.
the shape is also awful and unergonomic.
I agree. I basically got carpal tunnel from this model. Had to learn to hover a part of my hand over it whenever I was using it, instead of cupping my palm down like the design would imply.

Was thinking of those small footprint plant towers that were circulating online a decade or so ago. Look like big upright pipes with holes in the sides for plants. Continually circulating water inside. I’m sure they’re expensive now but I bet we could throw one together without too much effort if we had the knowledge.
