Fediverse@lemmy.world•Pluralistic: The online community trilemmaEnglish
6·6 days agoIt’s at least something to explain what the title’s referencing. Acknowledging that smaller audiences are often preferred doesn’t really seem at odds with that. It just points to A and B having higher priority than C, right?
But people should just read the article, it’s pretty quick and has more context than the quote.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Pluralistic: The online community trilemmaEnglish
9·6 days agoKey quote for the curious:
They [the paper he’s discussing] conclude that there’s a community-member’s “trilemma”: a set of three priorities that can never be fully satisfied by any group. The trilemma consists of users’ need to find:
a) A community of like-minded people;
b) Useful information; and
c) The largest possible audience.
The thing that puts the “lemma” in this “trilemma” is that any given group can only satisfy two of these three needs. It’s hard to establish the kinds of intimate, high-trust bonds with the members of a giant, high-traffic group, but your small, chummy circle of pals might not be big enough to include people who have the information you’re seeking.
Think I used this for a little while. It was pretty much a slightly better Postman, back when Postman itself was less annoying.
Frustratingly, at some point I opened Insomnia and it randomly lost all my requests/history. That soured me on it. Then when I tried it again a couple years later, it had that bad ‘freemium’ feel, even if it is still FOSS.
Love the feel of playing on a real TV. 😄
Woah, nice! I didn’t have any idea at first what model or line I had. When I first went to look it up a few years back, I thought, until I looked real close, that mine was that one. As if I had accidentally and unknowingly bought a signature model lol.
That one seems like a much nicer version of this! Seeing that model also made me aware of her music and band, which are pretty great.

Language Learning@sopuli.xyz•How's your language learning going this week? - Weekly thread
1·13 days agoHighly understandable! I was just looking around a bookshop this weekend and thinking about all the ones I already have that I’m not reading (some foreign language, but also just regular English books). It’s so much easier to buy than to see it through. But then when you do really get into a book and finish it, it’s usually very much worth the effort.
I had also asked about cleaning recently, this is the one I was needing to touch up. So as a bonus, here’s a little before/after shot.

The before frets were grimier than they look in that pic. The area around the bridge comes off worse in the photo than it was. All around it seemed clean at a distance, but was actually pretty gross. I wound up just giving the fretboard a good rub down with a microfiber cloth, same for most of the body, and using a touch of Brasso I had around the house on the metal sections. Not perfect but much better.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did you drink alcohol when you were younger than me?
21·14 days agoWhen I was very young my mom was making bread with beer and I begged her to let me try it. Finally she relented that I could have a sip. I took one smell of the can and never had really had interest in trying again.
Thought when it became legal for me, but figured I would either waste 5 bucks if I hate it or become an alchoholic if I don’t. Don’t trust myself enough to assume I’d always stay moderate with stuff like that.
Now that I’m older, I’ve seen plenty of friends get deep into it then struggle through getting sober. Feel like I made good decisions.
It’s gotta be The Cool S.

Language Learning@sopuli.xyz•How's your language learning going this week? - Weekly thread
3·14 days agoAgreed on the shadowing rec. Journaling in your target language might be helpful too. Even w/o feedback, thinking about how to phrase things can be productive.
But if you already do well with reading and listening, maybe it’s worth reflecting on your goals. Do you feel it’s important for you to be able to speak well and produce sentences?

Language Learning@sopuli.xyz•How's your language learning going this week? - Weekly thread
3·14 days agoI didn’t know they still had courses you could finish. I remember back in the day it seemed like the courses were all managable chunks of lessons and pretty fun. When I look at it now it seems like it’ll just go in forever. I’m sure it varies a lot for each language.
Props for completing it! Hope you find a good next step.

Language Learning@sopuli.xyz•How's your language learning going this week? - Weekly thread
6·15 days agoI’ve noticed myself slipping this week on doing lessons and videos. Gotta get back in the groove. On the good side tho, I’ve done at least a little every day and I’m more caught up than usual with Anki.
I started Slay the Spire 2 this week and played around in different languages. Spanish was very easy for me, but it was so good to see that Japanese was much more comfortable than German. I haven’t really started studying German, but Japanese can feel daunting with its non-phonetic alphabet making new words tough.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over TariffsEnglish
93·16 days agoImportant to note that many companies are suing, Nintendo is not uniquely taking on the government.
Given recent rulings, it seems like not suing right now might be equivalent to giving up free money. Why not ask for what you’re owed?
Sad thing is all these companies near certainly passed most of the costs onto consumers, and consumers almost certainly will see none of the refunds.

Technology@lemmy.world•Motorola GrapheneOS devices will be bootloader unlockable/relockableEnglish
185·19 days agoHopefully this initiative sticks, sounds like my next phone (eventually) might just be Motorola/Graphene.
And thanks for being on Lemmy! Try to keep in mind that all the less-active-than-you’d-hope communities need your help. Engage where you can to support the community building effort, it makes a difference here.
This thread (and community) is kinda the starter pack: https://threadiverse.link/lemmy.ca/post/40160493
Other than that, search for your interests and sift through /all a little, you should be able to build up your subs pretty quick.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What are some good FOSS video editing softwares for computer? Preferably works on Linux
18·20 days agoKdenlive - Worked the best for me, but has the worst name.
Shotcut - Seems feature rich and reasonably good
Openshot - Seemed more approachable, a little less performant.
Blender - I’ve heard it includes a good video editor in there somewhere, tho I’ve never used that.
Olive - I think was another Foss video editor? But it might be discontinued. Never tried it either.
Sometimes, these pages carry a notice such as “This page was intentionally left blank.”
Always a little amusing to see this. Once you add the message, it ceases to be blank any more!

That’s good! I haven’t tried it yet, but how different is it from Sepia?
