World News@quokk.au•Pope Leo calls war in Middle East a 'scandal' to humanity
4·23 hours agoOh, yes, I fully agree with the Pope. Unfortunately, though, it’s not the only scandal to humanity, but the head of church remains deliberately silent on others.
Just this month, for example, Pope Leo XIV told EWTN News he “cannot comment” on Jimmy Lai, the Catholic founder and publisher of the outspoken pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily, who was sentenced Feb. 9 on charges Chinese authorities say violate national security laws. The pope instead urged for peace, telling reporters: “Let’s pray for less hatred and more peace, and work for authentic dialogue.

As one catholic media asks, What Hold Has China Over the Vatican?
This is part of a bigger picture, with Pope Francis secret concordat with the CCP [Chinese Communist Party], ‘legitimizing’ the state-controlled Church in China, and – allegedly – throwing the long-suffering underground Church under the bus, a resistance which had held faithful to Rome for decades after the Communist takeover after their victory in the Second World War. The ‘official’ Church now gets to choose bishops, who are properly indoctrinated and hold the party line. (The Vatican has veto power, but apparently it’s never been exercised). There are other major problems, such as the law that no one under 18 is permitted to go to church, attend Mass or, apparently, participate in the sacraments (except, perhaps, ‘underground’). Crosses are destroyed, and images of Xi Jinping are to be put up in churches, and crucifixes taken down. And sermons are carefully monitored to ensure they are properly ‘sinicized’, with nothing subversive to the regime getting through. No streaming or on-line evangelization is permitted. Priests also surrender their passports, and can only travel with permission …

World News@quokk.au•Trump demands death penalty charges over media’s coverage of Iran War
36·6 days agoI respectfully disagree. He may not know that, but he is the president of the U.S. In such capacity he is responsible for this even if he didn’t know, especially if he is threatening the media and freedom of opinion. I am sure he has a bunch of people around him who could advise him, he just has to listen.
If you and me or any other random guy on the web is saying something like that, we may apologize if we didn’t know, but if you are in such a position it is unexcusable imo.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Without a hint of irony, Russia mocks US for 'miscalculating' Iran warEnglish
123·6 days agoI don’t care which type of government a country has but I support each country’s sovereignty.
I don’t know which country you are in, but I assume we both are part of the global minority that has won the birth lottery and are now residing in a region with relatively stable democratic institutions, a high standard of living, and the enjoyment of expressing an opinion without fear of the police showing up and make you disappear.
The UN Charter, the Declaration of Human Rights, and all other international agreements are valuable if respected by everyone that signed them. Countries like Iran, Russia, and China have signed most of these agreements (including the Declaration of Human Rights), but are apparently ignoring them by default. Russia, for example, agreed to more than 20 ceasefire agreement since its Ukraine invasion has began in 2014, and the Kremlin has undermined all of them.
Iran has now been sending weapons to Russia, supporting its aggression. China has been rightfully named a decisive enabler of Russia in the Ukraine war. Your argument that Ukraine is also supported by the West is dishonest and discredits you, because Ukraine is defending itself. The EU, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and other democratic states are supporting Ukraine’s defense. Iran and China are supporting Russia’s aggression.
This is why we should all care. Because the UN Charter and all other agreements are worthless if not enforced, and we are going in the wrong direction if we don’t stop those who breach them.
Autocratic regimes are not only suppressing their own citizens, they are also actively threatening Western-style democracies and the people there. We must oppose them by all means - militarily, politically, and economically. I don’t want, to provide an example, cheap oil and gas from Russia and Iran nor any renewable energy tech from China.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Without a hint of irony, Russia mocks US for 'miscalculating' Iran warEnglish
335·6 days agoDid Iran ever breached Ukraine sovereignty?
Yes, it did. It has been helping Russia doing so, which is clearly the aggressor in this war.
If you want to talk about Iranian sovereignty, I suggest you talk with Iranians. They want a regime change in their country more than anyone else.
Your argumentation here in thread - following a post about Russia’s aggression against Ukraine - is disingenuous to say the least. Unfortunately, this kind of watering down autocratic systems is still widespread here on Lemmy.

Europe@europe.pub•Belgian prime minister calls for EU to normalise ties with Russia
51·7 days agoOP is posting - apparently under a range of alt accounts - almost exclusively anti-European and anti-democratic links, often as re-posts from some ml communities.
Addition:
Europeans Criticize De Wever’s Call to Normalize Russia Ties
- European officials criticized Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever’s call to cut a deal with Russia’s Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine and resume the flow of cheap Russian energy to Europe.
- EU ministers, including Swedish Energy Minister Ebba Busch and EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, rejected De Wever’s comments, stating that Europe will not buy gas from Russia and will not fuel the Russian war machinery.
- De Wever’s comments were also criticized by his own government, with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot saying that normalization with Russia is not the same as dialogue and would send a signal of weakness.
I don’t think you read my comment.
Iran do not pose a security threat to Europe either. Even in Ukraine it is no longer the case.
Your comment amounts to nothing but autocratic propaganda as it is outright false. Even Chinese state media is citing Iran, saying Ukraine is a ‘legitimate target,’ and the Chinese government is supporting the Iranian regime as we know. They are explicitly threatening Ukraine.
That aside, Iran already provided weapons to Russia as you say yourself, and it has thus been posing a significant threat to Ukraine and Europe.

Canada•Canada joins criticism of US over Russia sanctions rollback
151·8 days agoI get your point and fully agree. But I have just a nitpick in that everything Trump, Putin, or Xi (and many other ‘world leaders’) do isn’t for their countries or even their peoples but rather for their personal gains, political power, and money. It’s not so much about the US, Russia, China but rather about individual politicians’ interests and their total indifference toward their countries and the people imho.

Canada•‘It’s surreal’: US sanctions lock International Criminal Court judge out of daily life
1·10 days agoNo, it has not turned around. It’s gotten even worse since.
But there is no reason imho to repost things that old because we know this already. If we start posting things from last year because they didn’t get better we might soon have a lot of re-reads.
In addition, I don’t see how this is related to Canada.
It’s just another post in OP’s eternal propaganda mission. To give you an idea what I mean: China’s minority policy hasn’t turned around. Russia is still waging a war against Ukraine. Iran is still threatening protesters at home. Should we post all these here in the Canada community?

It’s paywalled.
