131·13 days agoAssuming parking spot is perpendicular to the roadway, backing in is just the correct way for a vehicle with front wheel steering. The centre of rotation is in line with the rear axle. The front needs to move through a bigger arc to line up with the spot, than the back does.
Sure you can make it work by driving in forwards, but then you need to swing way wide out first, to get the turning done (or even, god forbid, reverse back out for a second bite at the apple).
Wow, I knew there was a cost to context switching, but 20 mins? Wow. I guess I’ve not truly focused on anything deeply for the last decade. I aim for 25 mins at a time of sitting still and working on something, then get up and move around a bit. But I’ll usually glance at my phone a couple of times during that to check the time, see if I’ve got any messages etc.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Looking for recommendations for men's grooming stuff
1·16 days agoIt is a detergent, but I don’t think that means you can call it a soap. I could be wrong though. The best soap has the glycerin left in, so it’s moisturising your skin even as the detergents are drying it out.

4·16 days agoAlso, soap and shampoo bars are the way to go instead of liquid versions - less plastic waste.
If you’re concerned with dry/sensitive skin, try to find ones without SLS (Sodium lauryl sulphate), it’s a foaming agent used in loads of soap products, but it’s actually an irritant.

Love your optimism about rich nations not disintegrating. The way I see climate change happening, there’s soon major changes in weather/ rainfall. Also some ecological collapse (eg bees, other pollinators, ocean acidification), with knock on effects to agriculture. Even problems in other parts of the world create pressure for resources, wars, increased migration… Too much to detail, but many things that come to a breaking point in the next decades.
I’d love to hear why you think this seems unlikely. Look at the end of the roman empire. Or any empire. Things don’t stay the same just because.

2·17 days agoI remember a lot of long distance running, and some group sex where one person was the focus for everyone else to pleasure (if I ever write a sci-fi, I won’t put any sexy bits in it… always seems to age fast, and seems weird and dated after…[maybe that’s just me tho]).

What do you like about the blue Mars social structure?
Sadbutdru@sopuli.xyztoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•I know I could use a fresh startEnglish
1·17 days agoI guess the most fundamental 2 things is climate change, and the societal upheaval likely to result from certain modern technologies.
By climate change, I include patterns in economies, food security, water, migration, wars over resources, population/demographics, public health… that have already started but clearly will intensify.
For technology, I’ve heard that after the widespread use of the printing press, or the industrial revolution, there were big turbulent changes in society that lasted a century. Some people reckon the modern internet/social media was another such disruptor, and I do agree you can trace a lot of “post-truth”, loss of trust in institutions, etc, back to that. AI could make this worse too.
Then, most traditionally rich countries are facing demographic trouble and national debt.
It’s not clear how it’ll all shake out or when, but it’s difficult to see many players being able to afford regular supply missions to Mars in the next phase… lifetimes of people currently alive… we’re likely to see less progress than we’re used to.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Examples, when ethical concerns stopped scientific advances?
21·19 days agoSo many medicines are not licensed for pregnant women, not because there are known risks, but just because conducting human trials in that population is difficult ethically.
As a result, pregnant women have access to less treatment options, and may suffer unnecessary pain and adverse health outcomes. Which is also a bad thing, ethically…

2·21 days agoB) To add to what Cacaocow said, even if the devices themselves didn’t have this function (and I’m not sure all do), it would only ever be an issue for maintenance at the distribution level (last leg from secondary substation to user). Any work upstream of a substation will be fully isolated and grounded first.
This can be an issue for network operators with distribution- connected generation, though.
Not everyone gets lots of love, but I’m glad you do ;-)
