Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What technologies are constant failures but we can't stop trying to make work?
20·1 month agoHaha I feel like VR has already found it’s niche!
Apple taking over an entire car with car play ultra or otherwise comes to mind. Latest Aston Martin model with car play ultra was atrociously laggy, ran instrument panel screen at like 12fps.

politics @lemmy.world•Thanks to one man, Trump has successfully mounted a coup
19·5 months agoFucking hell. I can’t believe how regressive the US is becoming. And just how many fucking common sense laws were never passed and instead remained norms upheld by the court of public opinion mattering in the next election.

Interesting Shares@lemmy.zip•[Article] Man controls iPad with his mind using Synchron brain implantEnglish
2·8 months agoI haven’t seen any accessibility features for x86 machines that comes close to Apple’s switch control on iOS, but I also don’t actively look for it. I’m curious if other device manufacturers will try to get into this market as folks live longer on average in countries with socialized medicine.
Makes me think about how this would change my life were I in Mark’s position. Would be interesting to see games that are very accessible, controlling your own media seems like an easy win, and so long as you can see and talk communicating on demand is a huge life improvement.
Would be interesting to hear a system designed for blind folks.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•This $11,000 Chinese EV with semi-solid state batteries is about to shake up the industry
5·8 months agoArticle makes a lot of good points about the negligible EV innovation in the US due to major oil and gas producer interests. It seems like a chicken or the egg problem in the US where high power charging networks aren’t built because there’s not enough EVs on the road to demand better access while there’s not enough EVs on the road because of a lack of charger access. Seems like unless there’s a miraculous shift in US domestic EV cell production, the US is content to be left behind with overpriced ICE vehicles

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Completely Lost on What Path to Take as an unemployed SWE
2·9 months agoI have plenty of colleagues with their master’s degree - some went back to get a math related degree for actuarial roles, and some finished exams and just wanted more money when they switched companies (already employed as actuaries). The latter usually focus on data related degrees as the market aggressively hunts for folks who can pass new technical skills/knowledge onto their team of juniors.
If you can swing the master’s degree with your personal tolerance for debt, I think it’s a viable option. However, I’d aggressively study for exam P and FM to get at least one passed by the middle of fall semester so you’ll be ready to apply for summer internships. If you snag one, you may be able to work part time during your final 2 semesters if you prove yourself valuable enough.
Also, a huge topic in actuarial science is proving you met regulatory standards, and I presume you’re very familiar with git and/or other VCS, which can be a useful skill (include on your resume).

5·9 months agoActuary of 3.5 years - entry level is also tough in this field. If you have no exams passed, you’ll probably need at least 2 to be considered for an opening. Your CS degree may count at some places but not others, although I’ve seen more openings accept them these days so the trend is in your favor. If you started studying hardcore now, I’d expect you to pass 2 exams by next spring. If you’re interested in the field, I’d recommend trying to also apply to actuarial internships since nearly all are well paid, include room and board, and lead to employment opportunities.
