It’s funny… out of all the variety of Far Side gags, somehow cow tools became an underground classic of sorts. To me, it’s a medium-funny gag, but there are much funnier ones.

So what is it, then? Did it capture some key, psychological insight in to animal intelligence vs. naked ape intelligence? Is cow tools a versatile trope in a way that most of the others couldn’t be?

Am I even in the ballpark, or like Lewis Black, should I simply jam a sharpened pencil in my eye? lol

It was the most insrutable. And it was very template friendly, versatile trope as you put it. Has very clearly defined elements that move from the foreground to the distance. It makes no sense by itself so one must give it meaning. In the process any meaning can be had or made with a few minor edits.

I could put a yogi on the left and a bunch of colored spheres on the table and say that it’s chakra tools and it would make just as much sense. Especially since chakras and cow tools both don’t exist.

Fffff… thank you. Excellent. That’s much better than the speculative bullshit I was seemingly trying to concoct, there. :S

Oh, dammit, I really love my little Chakra-incense box!
(plus I can do a pretty serviceable job of Yogi Bear’s voice, et al)

(god dammit… yeah, and I’m still having a problem transferring photos from my phone. But it really is a very nice little Chakra-box, I swear)
